Kiteboards Cabarete: Susi's father secret spot
During this amazing trip to Cabarete Tal and I did, we met Susi’s father in his own place, working at his small cozy home-factory ;-). A nice easy going guy who loves his family and job - boards Shaper. This guy is an icon in Cabarete and not only because he is the father of Susi Mai, the Cabrinha pro chick, but he is also the boards-magician of the Caribbean.
So.... who is Guenter Mai?
Guenter “Plinsi” is a shaper for over seven years and own his brand: Kiteboards Cabarete. He is a local kiteboard company that specializes in customized kite boards to create the smoothest and best ride that you will ever have! Working with the latest board design, materials and construction. Kiteboards Cabarete has been at the forefront of Caribbean Kiteboarding since the beginning.
Shapes and Design:
This section will give you further insight into how we make our boards and the construction process. If you have any questions feel free to contact us at (I will build a form on the bottom)
Kiteboards Cabarete: Wood cave
All of the Kiteboard Cabarete freeride boards feature the latest in wood core construction, a technique inspired from snowboarding. This allows maximum strength and flexibility in the finished product. We use Californian Red Cedar to create the unique feel and flex that our boards have.

Foam Core (wave/race boards only)
To ensure a light weight finish to our custom wave board range, we use a foam core blank, hand shaped to your requirements and uniquely laminated with an exterior wood veneer. This gives our waves boards extra strength and a unique ‘all wood’ look, like no other board on the beach. Also helping to reinforce the fin boxes and inserts to insure they can handle any wave to drop into!
Kiteboards Cabarete: Lamination and Layers
Strength is always important in a good freeride kiteboard, this is achieved through solid construction and lamination process. Kiteboards Cabarete uses a typical sandwich construction, consisting of the two main wood core layers, laminated together with fiberglass re-enforcement. Including the two pine stringers that run down the boards entire length, ensuring strength on both heel and toe-side edges. To finish the lamination stage, the wood core is wrapped in fiberglass and vacuum bagged with epoxy resin. the vacuum reduces weight, eliminates excess resin and ensures a solid lamination and drying stage.
Concave and rocker outline
Each and every freeride board that we make has a concave bottom, this improves the rail grip on the water when riding and makes them much more efficient up-wind. Typical we use a three stage concave pattern, leaving the center of the board flat and each rail curing into the water, this makes landings a lot easier.
The rocker outline on each board can vary a bit, due to the custom nature of our construction and the length of each board. However the typical rocker outline that we use is 4cm on each tip, giving the boards and 8cm overall rocker line. This comes as standard on each board, unless per special request of the client.
Plugs and Inserts (freeride boards only)
Kiteboards Cabarete use a unique countersunk insert system for the plates and foot straps on the freeride range of boards. This means that the foot straps can be applied fast and effectively without risk of stripping threads and ruining the board on a sandy beach. The foot strap screws are inserted through the bottom of the board and countersunk, leaving a bolt to be tightened on the top on the board to fasted the foot straps in place.
Advantages of this system include:
- No risk of stripping threads in the board
- Any bolt can be used, so no problem with compatibility or spare parts
- Makes the foot straps strong and never come loose or come off whilst riding
