And then I saw Hagit Oz, by chance, without her knowing. It was a stormy, blistery winter day, the sea was raging, and she was tying knots, pulling, and patiently organizing, her kite surfing equipment with almost religious devotion Then she leaped into an crazy storm for a brave, adrenaline-filled day of surfing (and quite dangerous, I should add), while most of her friends were at home, under the blanket, or in some small café. Hagit, it should be noted, was the only woman on beach that day, a merciless day that left no room for mistakes.

Even the men on the beach that day were not very eager about going in. My curiosity was soaring. I understood that this was more than just a story. Where does it come from? From unwavering, unconditional devotion to your greatest love, your true love? Something that is really stronger than you, that you are willing to submit yourself to completely? I had to ask…

Are there no more Pilates classes being offered in the air-conditioned gym?
Hagit Oz kitesurfing champion, looked at me with a gaze that seemed to diminish the force of nature around her. She smiled reservedly and continued tying her equipment, becoming drawn into her own world, an eccentric, crazy world of adventures. I was interested in this combination.

Where does this idea come from, to come to the beach on such a stormy winter day, with a full kite-surfing kit, in your surfing suit?

Hagit Oz kitesurfing champion says:
The sea was a refuge for me. I would look at the horizon, understanding that there are no limits to aspirations. I saw windsurfers in the Dolfinarium beach and I understood that I really want to windsurf, and so my sister surprised me on my 16th birthday, and gave me a windsurfing course as a present. Since then, my life has not been the same – I discovered a world I was fascinated with. I would go in at dusk, and get out when it became dark. I remember the club manager would shout at me from the beach to get out of the water, and I simply did not want to.

I was hooked. I bought all the equipment, and advanced rapidly. I reached a very high level in those four years, and then I saw kite surfing for the first time on TV, with my mother, and I was immediately mesmerized. A competition was held in Tarifa (Spain), and I really wanted to be there. My mother supported and encouraged me the whole time. I wanted to be the world champion from the start, and with the right timing, I knew I could make it.

How long have you been doing this? 8 years.
Hagit Oz kitesurfing champion says:
Greatest moment: On the podium in Brazil. 3rd place in the world, 2002. A climactic moment which was also a little sad… I understood that economically, my chances to continue were low…

Why kite surfing?
Hagit Oz kitesurfing champion says:
First of all, I see this sport as a kind of dance. I did floor gymnastics as a child, and I saw how this sport combines dance and acrobatics. You can clearly see the person's body language as he is surfing. You hold the steering bar, which is connected to the trapeze, and you are very visible. The body language, coordination, agility, flow with the force of

nature, something that seems very challenging to an onlooker, something very difficult which drives me to face fears and overcome obstacles; something which does not come easy, which requires a great deal of will and mental strength in the endless space that exists between you and nature.

You need a great deal of freedom and living space, to strive towards the horizon…
Hagit Oz kitesurfing champion says:
Yes, this was evident at a number of crossroads in my life. The first was when I was in the army. I was a sports instructor, serving far from my home, in Shivta, where there is a lot of wind, but no sea. I loved what I did not feel in my natural place – the sea. Whenever I had time, I would run to the telephone, call the wind computer, and when I heard it saying "28 knots north", I would go crazy. At some point, they wanted to send me to a sports officer's course, and I did not want to go. Being far away from the sea was difficult. Afterwards I convinced my commanders to send me to Glilot, to train senior IDF officers. I would take them to the 'cliff' beach, would train them there, and would then go to the sea and surf.

The second turning point was after my army service. I started working in my father's locksmith's shop, which was physical work, and so I had the opportunity to go to the beach whenever it was windy, because I was working for my father, and a father would not say no to his daughter. The third turning point was after my father became ill, and I went to study fitness training in the Wingate Institute. From there I went on to become a gym manager in Holmes Place in Herzliya. My dream was to compete in the world kite surfing tour.

My strong will led me to find a person that could invest money in me, so that I could fulfill my dream and compete.
I began advertising myself through the instructors working with me, and people around. Thanks to one of the instructors I met a person who was willing to help me and had no ulterior motive. He was very enthusiastic about the idea. I told him a contest was being held in Brazil and he simply said "go and see if that's your dream." He gave me an envelope with 20,000 NIS in cash! Just like that!

Two weeks later I was on the plane to Rio de Janeiro...
I documented the journey in a journal. When I returned from Brazil, I decided to compete in the entire round of the world tour, and that I would need another sponsor. One of my personal trainers was Uzi Mahlav, one of the owners of the “Off Tenne” poultry company. He was the one responsible for paving my way to the world tour. I even put an “Off Tenne” logo on the parachute.

Are there any differences in surfing styles between men and women?

Hagit Oz kitesurfing champion says:
Of course! A woman uses more emotions, and less strength. A woman performs physically through emotional flow, while a man works with more force, control and ego. The energy is different. Women usually "flow" more, and are more sensitive, just like in everyday life.

What does your family think of this?

Hagit Oz kitesurfing champion says:
My family is very supportive of everything I choose to do, and of everything that makes me happy. My entire family loves the sea, although, except for me, no one in my family has ever participated in water sports. I have missed many family events because there were good winds, and I wanted to go surfing. When I was younger this could have been disappointing for them, but over the years they understood there's nothing they can do about it, and that this is a positive addiction.

My parents supported me all the way, in various kite events and competitions in Israel, but not abroad. My mother really enjoys the site of all the colors involved in kite surfing in Israel's beaches.

Are there any issues you need to cope with?....
