World-class surfer Grant "Twiggy" Baker of Durban, South Africa has officially signed onto the Cabrinha team. Twiggy is a hellman when it comes to big surf and we are stoked he is joining the kite world. He took the 2007 XXL big wave title for a 60 ft monster at Dungeons and is nominated for all categories in 2008. Twig brings an explosive energy to the program and we can?t wait to see what he does with a kite.
Career Highlights
1999 - 2002
Started looking for and surfing waves over 15ft in South Africa. Found them everywhere between J-bay and Cape Town?Learned from traveling surfers coming to Red Bull Big Wave Africa how to surf big waves.
2003
-3rd Place: First Big Wave contest ? Red Bull Big Wave Africa ? Paddle event (18-20ft Dungeons)
-Winner: Best Tube Red Bull Big Wave Africa ? Paddle event (18-20ft Dungeons)
-XXL Nomination for Biggest paddle in wave
2004
-Towed Massive Dungeons for the first time.
-Winner: Red Bull BWA Biggest Wave
-Came over to the USA and Hawaii for the first time and surfed Mavericks, Todos and Waimea for two months.
2005
-Started surfing every swell over 15ft in Cape Town ?realized how big it got and how often.
-Spent two months surfing in USA and Hawaii at Mavericks, Todos and Waimea. .
-Secured invite to the 2006 Mavericks Surf Contest .
2006
-Winner: Mavericks Surf Contest (20ft)
-Received Jay Award for best spirit in event
-Nominated XXL Biggest Paddle Wave
-Insane season in South Africa, at least 20 sessions of 15ft+ surf in Cape Town
-Spent three months surfing in USA and Hawaii at Mavericks, Todos and Waimea..
2007
-Winner : XXL Biggest wave award with Greg Long for 60ft+ session at Dungeons
-5th place North Shore Tow contest
-Another great season in Cape Town at least 15 sessions in 15ft + surf
-Spent two months in USA/Hawaii surfing Mavericks, Todos and Wiamea.
2008
-2nd Place Mavericks surf Contest (15 ? 18ft)
-Biggest session ever at Cortez Reef (80ft) XXL Biggest Wave nomination
-Spent two months in USA/Hawaii surfing Mavericks, Todos and Wiamea .
-1st Place Red Bull Big Wave Africa
-Surfed a 70ft wave at Tafelberg (New Reef in Cape Town)
