Cabarete Kiteboarding School Logo Story

Cabarete Kiteboarding School. I discovered the joy of kiteboarding in 1999 while living in New Zealand, in the Bay of Islands. During a visit from my mother, (Jordonna) I suggested we buy one another a coveted greenstone carved necklace. It is the tradition of New Zealandís native people, the Maoris, that these treasures can only be received as a gift from a loved one, they cannot be bought for oneself.
We shopped together, choosing the necklace that best fit the other. For me, this was the ìTail of the Fishî carved from a dark, almost black, jade. It symbolizes the Maori legend of the creation of the island. The God Maui was fishing on his canoe (the South Island), and pulled the fish (the North Island) out of the sea. The very top of the North Island was the tail of that fish. I loved living there and first learned to kiteboard in the beautiful waters of the North Island, so the symbol held a special meaning for me.
According to Maori custom, once given, the jade greenstone necklaces represent all that the giver wishes for their loved one, and should never be taken off. For many years of world-wide kiteboarding I always wore this necklace, as a symbol of my love of New Zealand, and the love and support I received from my family. It is a perfect fit that its design is now the LEK logo.
Necklaces carved from native coconut shells by a local Dominican craftsman remind us of this beautiful place : Cabarete.
In the spirit of aloha, please enjoy the special meaning of this logo. After all, the giving of a gift to a loved one is a universal language.
